Airbus and BlueRoom Study Mixed Reality HEMS Training

Airbus and BlueRoom Study Mixed Reality HEMS Training
Airbus and BlueRoom Assess HEMS Training Systems

Airbus Helicopters and Australian simulation company BlueRoom Simulations have signed a memorandum of understanding to examine mixed reality technologies for future helicopter emergency medical services programmes.

The agreement was signed during RotorTech 2026 on Australia’s Gold Coast. The companies will study how immersive simulation systems may support air medical crews, emergency responders and defence personnel. The work will focus on operations conducted under difficult conditions.

The collaboration centres on the potential use of BlueRoom’s mixed-reality training platform in future HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Services) support packages. The companies will examine how the system could be integrated into aircraft training and sustainment programmes.

BlueRoom’s platform allows crews to train with medical equipment and operational procedures inside immersive virtual environments. The system is designed to reflect operational mission conditions. It recreates scenarios linked to emergency and specialist helicopter work.

The agreement identifies several possible applications for the technology. These include crew resource management training, search-and-rescue operations, hoist missions, and law enforcement activities. Other specialist mission profiles linked to emergency response services are also included in the discussions.

The memorandum indicates rising interest in alternative training methods. These approaches reduce the use of live aircraft during some exercises. The companies will assess whether mixed reality systems can support realistic operational training within regulated environments.

BlueRoom Simulations developed the platform for immersive mission-based exercises. The system allows crews to complete some training scenarios without deploying aircraft for every operation. The technology focuses on operational procedures associated with emergency response and specialist aviation missions.

Airbus Helicopters and BlueRoom Simulations will also review how mixed reality technology may support emergency medical crews during training for high-stress situations. The agreement includes consideration of how immersive simulation environments shall be applied within future HEMS programmes.

The companies will also discuss the possible use of the system within wider aircraft training and sustainment activities. The collaboration will examine how mixed reality technology could fit into existing helicopter training structures linked to emergency aviation services.

The memorandum also outlines the possibility of a longer-term relationship between the companies. This could include integration of BlueRoom’s technology into Airbus’ wider global supply chain activities. It could also include participation in international tender opportunities connected to helicopter training and support programmes.

The agreement focuses on exploring mixed reality applications for future helicopter emergency medical services operations. It also covers related operational training activities linked to specialist helicopter missions.
